Welcome to the patriotic season of Memorial Day and 4th of July. We are sharing quilts that honor the spirit of our nation this month. From stars and strips to timeless symbols of freedom, each quilt is a testament to the enduring beauty of patriotism and gratitude.
Thank you to those who sent us their patterns to include. Please visit the designer's links and stores to show your support. Be sure to follow them on social media because they offer so many fun patterns. If you would like to be included in future inspiration blogs, just let us know. Next up are Summer inspired, Foundation Paper Piecing, and Applique quilts if you would like to participate.
The above pattern is the Stripe and Spangled pattern from the Quilts of Valor (QOV) website. If you haven't heard of QOV, it is an organization that provides handmade quilts that are awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.” To use the term Quilt of Valor, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, must be awarded (it is not a gift), and it must be recorded with the organization. It is a great way to put your quilting skills to work and honor a Veteran!
Patriotic Quilt Inspirations
Bella Rose has several patriotic kits and patterns on their website and the American Heart is just one of them. Most of their patterns are scrappy but you can make the colors your own. They also include multiple sizes including a table runner, throw, and bed quilt size.
Moda Fabrics has this free Stripes and Three Stars pillow pattern on their website for an adorable lumbar pillow that can be made with just scraps. Use this pillow on your porch, a rocking chair, or take it to a picnic for a nap after your picnic lunch.
Can you see this not only in patriotic fabrics, but also in more traditional fabrics? Such a versatile pattern. The Liberty Home pattern by The Smitten Chicken is within the QOV size requirements and uses fat quarters plus background and borders. The inspiration for this flag quilt "is that some soldiers came home and some give their life for Liberty."
TJ Wright had this pattern in the Hoffman lookbook and isn't it fabulous? TJ would love for you to create a stunning quilt with the Linen Vines quilt pattern in any colorway you choose. The pattern comes in two sizes and includes a bonus standard pillow sham. "With it's unique one-block design, you can easily create a dynamic and eye-catching piece for your home."
Are you looking for additional projects along with quilts? Nancy Halverson of Art to Heart has a Liberty Heights On Wandor Lane BOM series offering a stand-alone quilt for each month and a quilt block that will transform into a 12-month full quilt at the end of the year. The monthly patterns also include six additional projects every month so there is something for everyone.
Megan of Modern Moon Quilt Studio has the ultimate flag quilt. "Although the details surrounding the origins of America's first flag are debated, Betsy Ross has become a notable figure representing the contribution of women to the American Revolution. The Betsy Quilt is a simple and nostalgic quilt pattern named for the maker of our country's first official flag. This quilt pattern is perfect for festive summer celebrations and patriotic decor."
"Gain skills and confidence with this fun beginner quilt and create a darling table runner or wall hanging that you can use over and over in various fabrics." My Fabric Addiction has this Land of Liberty pattern and kit along with several other patriotic quilts available. They are all beginner-friendly and quick to make. If you do not like or want to cut your fabric, grab a kit!
Juliah from Easy Piecy Quilts is working on two new patriotic quilts, to be released very soon, but this God and Country quilt is available now. "God and Country was designed with veterans and military families in mind. I am forever thankful to our military service members, past and present! This quilt is also a representation of all American's love of God and Country, celebrating the great blessings this land has been gifted."
Cotton and Joy has this fun and colorful Starly pattern and it can also be done in various colorways throughout the year. "The Starly quilt pattern combines modern and classic quilt patterns for an eye-catching look. The classic sawtooth star block pattern is wreathed, creating a secondary design that adds a touch of modernity and a distinctive aesthetic."
Lella Boutique is offering the Old Glory pattern bundle on sale right now. It comes with six holiday patterns all made in red, white, and blue. Six very different patterns will appeal to quilters of all types.
Stars and strips make a bold statement in the Independence Day table topper by Phoebe Moon Designs. Whether you use it as a tale topper or a wall hanging, this little quilt will help you celebrate summer.
What makes a quilt more patriotic in your mind? Is it color? Or is it more about the design? Share your thoughts, we would love to hear them!
