It is time for our last block!! Can you believe the year is ending? BOM Block 12... The Broken Dishes Block!
December BOM - Block 12
For the December BOM, we chose the simple Broken Dishes block to end the year. It is amazing how many different blocks you can get from four simple HSTs.
The Broken Dishes quilt block is a simple pattern that has been popular since the 1790s, and is one of the earliest recorded quilt designs. The pattern is made up of half square triangles arranged in a 4-patch square, with the squares turned at different angles to create the effect of broken dishes. Like so many blocks, the Broken Dishes block can be traced to the Underground Railroad, referring to a signal involving broken crockery at a future landmark.Â

Our friends continue to make great blocks each month and we love showing them off to you. Thank you to @mountainviewquilts and @cmariequilts!
How the BOM works.
Each month, we will send out a newsletter with that month's block, instructions, tips for designers, and the ability to purchase Adobe Illustrator digital images from our store to add to a pattern you are writing. Be sure to sign up to receive our newsletter to get the free BOM instructions every month.
The newsletter will include the link to download the block so you can sew along with us. It is written with standardized wording that we use here at Quilt Pattern Writers. That way, if you are a pattern designer, you can use the wording in your pattern. If you are a designer looking for a ghostwriter, you can see some of our work as we use this wording throughout the patterns we write. The digital files will include step-out diagrams, diagrams for standard units and assembly, as well as the finished block. Think of all the time you will save when adding these to your library! All for a nominal cost you can write off as a business expense.
The finishing instructions will come out very shortly with the sashing, borders, and assembly. After the first of the year, all the blocks will be combined into a full pattern that you can purchase. We will continue to have each month's digital illustration files available for download.
